Do You Need Winter Tires on Your Lexus in Vancouver?

BC winter tire rules explained for Lexus drivers in Metro Vancouver: which roads require them, what counts as a legal winter tire, and why all-wheel drive is not a substitute. Practical guidance from Frank Qian.

Every fall I hear the same question: “I live in Vancouver—do I really need winter tires?” The answer depends less on where you live and more on where you drive.

The Short Answer

If you stay in the Lower Mainland, winter tires are not required on many coastal routes. The Province of BC notes that, because of the more temperate climate, drivers are not required to use winter tires in many areas along the coast—but you remain responsible for equipping your vehicle for the conditions you drive in.

If you travel outside the Lower Mainland and southeastern Vancouver Island—to the Interior or over a mountain pass—the Province says winter tires are required on most highways. Check the signs and the Province’s route maps for your specific trip.

When the Rules Apply

According to the Province of BC, winter tires or chains are required on most designated routes from October 1 to April 30. For select highways that are not through mountain passes or high-snowfall areas, the requirement ends March 31. These routes are marked with regulatory signs, and non-compliant drivers may be turned away and fined.

What Counts as a Legal Winter Tire

For a passenger or all-wheel-drive vehicle, a legal winter tire in BC must have at least 3.5 mm of tread depth and be marked with either:

The Province recommends mountain/snowflake tires for cold-weather driving because they offer better traction on snow and ice, and recommends carrying chains for extreme conditions. Summer tires are not permitted on signed highways during the designated winter months, and chains on summer tires are not an acceptable substitute.

Does All-Wheel Drive Replace Winter Tires?

No. Many Lexus SUVs offer all-wheel drive—for example, Lexus Canada lists standard AWD on the 2026 NX 350h—but BC’s legal requirement is about the tire markings and tread depth, not the drivetrain. AWD can help you get moving; the tires are what grip the road when you brake and turn.

Studded Tires

Studded tires may only be used on BC highways from October 1 to April 30, and studs should not protrude more than 2 mm. If you use them on the front, they must also be on the back.

Practical Tips for Vancouver Lexus Drivers

Frequently Asked Questions

Are winter tires mandatory in Vancouver?

Not on many Lower Mainland routes. The Province of BC says drivers are not required to use winter tires in many coastal areas, but they are required on most highways outside the Lower Mainland and southeastern Vancouver Island.

What dates are winter tires required in BC?

On most designated routes, October 1 to April 30. On select routes not through mountain passes or high-snowfall areas, the requirement ends March 31.

Are all-season M+S tires legal winter tires in BC?

Yes, if they have at least 3.5 mm of tread. M+S is the minimum legal requirement; the Province recommends 3-peaked mountain/snowflake tires for better snow and ice traction.

Is all-wheel drive enough without winter tires?

No. BC’s requirement is based on tire markings and tread depth, so an AWD Lexus still needs legal winter tires on designated routes.
